Ballroom Dance Lessons?

Perhaps the greatest misunderstanding of the term “Ballroom Dance Lessons” is that one has to jump back to the 17th century in order to dance with the skills we teach. Rest assured, nothing could be further from the truth. All of the dance steps we teach translate well on ANY dance floor (Yes, even the Waltz). The dances we teach is more aptly called “touch dancing” for couples. Not a very well known term but nonetheless, the American versions of the classic dance steps we teach ensure that you will command any dance event.

Absolutely not. Our instructors are highly qualified, work with all skill levels and participate in ongoing training. In addition, our progressive system of dance instruction and our unique trophy system make it easy to learn. Though it will take time to learn the various dances and a full repertoire of steps, the learning is easy and fun. A steady approach with periodic practice will produce visible results in a short period. Keeping your lessons close together will help you progress more quickly, and make your experience more rewarding.

Your first lesson is on us! We offer a complimentary 30 minute dance lesson for you to come in and “try us out”. You’ll get to experience a 1 on 1 private lesson with one of our instructors in the dance(s) of your choice. All we need is your preferred date and time to book you!

We highly recommend that you schedule your lessons close together, especially in the beginning. The less time between lessons mean the less you will forget, the less you will need to review, and the more quickly you will learn and reach a confident level in your dancing. In addition, it is most effective for you to take privates in conjunction with group and practice lessons.

Five Star Dance Studios has been providing world class dance instruction in Indianapolis. We teach every level of dancer from “I can’t dance” to competitive coaching. Our staff is made up of competent and certified instructors, as well as internationally renown dancers with numerous titles.

Wear something comfortable that won’t inhibit movement. Some of our students come straight from work and others come for their lessons dressed casual. Of course, comfortable shoes are recommended! We suggest a pair of leather-soled shoes for gentlemen and a shoe with a back for the ladies similar to what you would wear to go out dancing. Athletic shoes don’t work well on the ballroom floor- They tend to stick and make it difficult to move your feet.

Not at all. We teach both individuals and couples here at Five Star Dance Studios. If you come in as one of our single students, your instructor will be your partner for your privates, and our group and practice sessions will provide plenty of opportunity to meet other students with the same interests and goals.

This answer varies for every individual depending on your overall goal, time frame, experience, instruct-ability, comprehension, retention, and practice time.

Private dance lessons consist of one student or a couple working with one or two instructors. Private instruction is tailored to your personal needs. Learning at your own pace is the optimum method of comprehension and that’s what private instruction enforces.
One common misconception about privates is that they take place in seclusion. On the contrary, multiple privates are often going on at the same time in our ballroom. Our students have found that learning in this environment gives them an advantage in social dance settings.

Privates are by appointment only, and may be scheduled during each studio’s business hours by calling the studio’s main number.

Our groups are designed to be taken in addition to your privates, and consist of several students learning from one instructor. Groups offer a wide variety of dances and topics to better your technique, physical fitness, and understanding of ballroom dance. All levels of students have the opportunity to participate. Depending on your studio of choice, groups are scheduled during the afternoon and in the evening throughout the week.

Privates and groups a perfect partnership. The structure and customizability of our privates will get you to where you want to be as a dancer quicker. However, the variety of our groups allow you to experience new and different dances, steps, and figures that you may not have gone over with your instructor. Take what you learn in a group class and polish it with your instructor, or experience a new side of the same dance in a group class.

Our practice sessions take place in the studio to prepare you for dancing socially. They allow you to apply material learned in your lessons without the pressure of the public eye upon you. Our students attend to have fun, learn, and dance! At our practice sessions, we dim the lights, supply the music, and have a fabulous time in a party like atmosphere. Students have the opportunity to dance and meet other students, as well as the other instructors.

Not necessarily. In order to accommodate your busy schedule, we attempt to be as flexible as possible but aren’t always able to schedule the same time every week. We also recommend that you schedule your lessons a few weeks in advance in order to reserve your preferred times. Groups vary depending on type and level of dance so that everyone has an opportunity to attend. Practice sessions are typically a set time each week.
